began as the personal quest of photographer Tim Mantoani to document and preserve noted photographers together with their images?
We have come to a point in history where we are losing both photographic recording mediums and iconic photographers, Mantoani comments?
While many people are familiar with iconic photographs, the general public has no idea of who created them. This book became a means to do that, the photographer and their photograph in one image.

As to why he is using a soon-to-be-extinct photographic medium only a handful of which survive, the 20×24 Polaroid, Mantoani explains, ?I chose the format for two reasons. First, it is very possible that in just a few years, film for this camera will no longer exist. Second, to me this is the ultimate view camera. If you are going to call the greatest living photographers and ask to make a photo of them and you are shooting 35mm digital, they may not take your call. But if you say you are shooting 20×24 Polaroid, they will at least listen to your pitch.

マントアーニはこう語っています。
「私たちは今、写真の記録媒体と象徴的な写真家の両方を失いつつある歴史の転換点にいます。多くの人が有名な写真を知っていますが、それを撮影した人物についてはほとんど知られていません。この本は、写真家と彼らの作品を1枚の写真の中に収めることで、それを伝える手段になりました。」

彼は、現在ほとんど残っていない絶滅寸前の写真媒体 「20×24 ポラロイド」 を使用した理由について、次のように説明しています。
「私はこのフォーマットを選んだ理由が2つあります。1つ目は、このカメラ用のフィルムが数年後にはもう存在しなくなる可能性が高いこと。2つ目は、私にとってこれは究極のビューカメラだからです。もし私が世界的な写真家たちに連絡を取り、35mmデジタルカメラで撮影したいと言ったら、彼らは私の話を聞いてくれないかもしれません。でも『20×24ポラロイドで撮る』と言えば、少なくとも話を聞いてくれるでしょう。」
