『The Early Years 1965-1972』はロジャー・ウォーターズ、リチャード(リック)・ライト、ニック・メイスン、シド・バレットがロンドンの建築学校（リージェント・ストリート・ポリテクニック：現ウェストミンスター大学)で出会った頃から、シドが脱退し、デヴィッド・ギルモアが新たにラインナップに加わるまでのピンク・フロイドのストーリーを見事に時系列化、シングル「アーノルド・レイン」から20分という壮大な「エコーズ」までのサイケデリック・プログレッシヴ・ロックの誕生の歴史ともいえる。このバンドの進化を耳で体験し、彼らのごく初期の録音から、史上最大の売り上げを誇るアルバムのひとつである『狂気』に至るまでの間の、彼らの進化の過程と、彼らが文化の革新において果たした歴史を時代を追って探求することができる壮大なる歴史一大絵巻である。


1969年ベルギーで行われたピンク・フロイドのライヴ・ステージにフランク・ザッパが飛び入りで共演した「星空のドライヴ」の映像、「The Man」と「The Jorney」からなる未発表コンセプト・アルバムのもととなるステージの模様、1970年『原子心母』の4人のメンバーだけの初期スタジオ・ヴァージョン音源、当時 “Nothing-Part?” と呼ばれていた「エコーズ」のもととなるスタジオでのセッション、1972年『雲の影』の2016年リミックスなども収録されている他、日本のファンにとって特筆すべきこととしては、ピンク・フロイド初来日公演でもあった1971年8月箱根芦ノ湖畔で行なわれた伝説のフェスティヴァル「箱根アフロディーテ」出演時の「原子心母（Atom Heart Mother）」のライヴ映像が45年の月日を経て収録されることも決定した。
