1978 recording of American clarinetist Perry Robinson collaborating with Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos and Indian tabla player Badal Roy. Side A features the spiritually inclined "Shenandoah (How I Long To Look Into Your Third I)" named after an American folk song, and avant garde oriented "Kundalini" a roughly 10 mins track featuring snarling interplay amidst tabla beats. Kundalini means spiral, a term referring to the sacred energy that resides at the base of the spine within the body. Side B features the 15-minute "Always Backwards," a trio featuring Nana Vasconcelos. Berimbau, African talking drum, shells add color over the dynamic tabla beat, while the ever-changing clarinet intertwines to create an amazing ethnic sound.
アメリカ人クラリネット奏者Perry Robinsonによるブラジル人打楽器奏者Nana Vasconcelosとインド人タブラ奏者Badal Royとのコラボレーションを記録した78年の作品。A面ではアメリカ民謡の名が付けられたスピリチュアルな志向の”Shenandoah (How I Long To Look Into Your Third I)”と、一転約10分に渡りタブラ・ビートの中時折唸りをあげるようにインタープレイを繰り返すアヴァンギャルドな”Kundalini”。Kundaliniは螺旋を意味し、体内の脊椎の基底部に眠る神聖なエネルギーを指す言葉。B面いっぱいにNana Vasconcelosを加えた三者による15分に及ぶ”Always Backwards”。強弱をつけたタブラ・ビートの上をビリンバウ、アフリカントーキングドラム、シェルが彩りを添え、変幻自在のクラリネットが絡み合う強烈なエスニック・サウンドを生み出しています。最高。
